Professional development of nursing residents for guiding families of children with disabilities
Keywords:
professional development, nursing, disability, family guidanceAbstract
This article explores the reasons behind the need to emphasize the professional development process in nursing, considering its systems approach and its focus on updating and refining knowledge and developing professional skills. Given the importance of the topic, the objective is to demonstrate the relevance of a professional development strategy for residents in Comprehensive Community Nursing, focused on providing family support for children with physical and motor disabilities. A qualitative descriptive study was conducted at the Faculty of Technology of the University of Medical Sciences of Camagüey, from September 2023 to July 2024. Theoretical methods were employed, including analysis-synthesis, inductive-deductive reasoning, and a systemic approach. Empirical methods included document analysis of the program and content within the specialty's curriculum, as well as questionnaires administered to students and professors. The results demonstrate that family guidance, particularly regarding disabilities and physical-motor disabilities, is not integrated into the discipline or the specialty's curriculum. This strategy is vital to the educational process, as it directly impacts the quality of care and performance within the community. Therefore, it is imperative to include aspects related to this complex topic in the curriculum. This reflects the professional development need to cultivate family guidance strategies for children with physical-motor disabilities to ensure high-quality care.
